The Major Difference of Paddle Blender and Ribbon Blender

 

 

The major difference between paddle blender and ribbon blender is that the ribbon blender is suitable for large batch of bulk materials no need conveyor; but the paddle mixer is more suitable for small batch or large batch but normally need conveyor. In addition, both types of mixers can mix materials of different sizes, shapes and densities.

 

Use Requirements
 

Do size your blender properly.


Do not replace your existing ribbon blender's motor with a larger one to handle a new higher-density formulation, at least not without consulting your blender manufacturer.


Do use a variable frequency drive (VFD) to allow slow start under full load and protect the system against a spike in start-up torque.


Do not bottom filling your blender. Optimal mixing in a ribbon blender requires enough batch material - equivalent to at least 30-40% of the rated volumetric capacity.


Do inform your blender supplier if you intend to remove the agitator after every batch.


Do consider a paddle-style agitator instead of a ribbon if blending fragile materials.


Do equip your ribbon blender with an extrusion screw if mixing thick pastes and other viscous applications.


After use, the blender should be cleaned and stored in a dry and ventilated place.

Q: What is the mechanism of ribbon blender?

A: The mixing medium often consists of inner and outer helical ribbons that are designed to move material both inwards and outwards. The external helical ribbons pull product from the sides of the mixer into the middle and the internal ribbons push the product back to the sides.

Q: How fast is a ribbon blender?

A: Ribbon blenders consist of a U-shaped horizontal trough and a solid agitator shaft mounted with spokes that support outer and inner helical blades called ribbons. Powered by a gearmotor drive, the agitator rotates and produces a peripheral speed of up to approximately 300 fpm.

Q: How to load a ribbon blender?

A: To be cost effective ribbon blenders are loaded to the top of the agitator. Lesser ribbon blender loading will allow proportionately faster mixing. The minimum loading is about 40% of the maximum which is required to keep both the inner and outer ribbon in the product zone.

Q: How does a paddle blenders work?

A: The shaft is driven by a motor to which paddles are connected. The rotational motion which helps in mixing the fluid with the paddle shaft arrangement. Two bladed and four bladed paddle are common. They turn at slow to moderate speed in the centre of the vessel and push the liquid rapidly and tangentially.
